From initial consideration of the building site, through compliance with building codes and zoning laws, to finding the right solutions within your established budget, Hood-Herring Architecture provides services far beyond that of building design.

Still, it is the firm’s design abilities that initially bring clients to Hood- Herring Architecture. Tilghman Herring and Jay Hood bring an astute sense of architectural styles, materials, and techniques to every project. Their partnership assures creative expertise and draws from a diverse portfolio that includes contemporary resort communities, commercial developments, single and multi-family residential design, historic preservation, municipal buildings and medical offices.

Client and Colleague Reviews

"We worked with Hood Herring Architecture to help us design our custom waterfront home. We came to the table with lots and lots of ideas, and Tilghman Herring worked with us to incorporate our ideas into an amazing house design. Tilghman easily gets an overall understanding of his clients vision and then adds his own creative ideas, helpful advice, and expertise to the project. We are thrilled with the functionality of our floor plan and the exterior presentation of our home. We highly recommend Tilghman." - Beth and Rick Stevens, clients

"We are thrilled with the home that Tilghman designed for our family. For two working parents, our time is very limited and our schedules somewhat unpredictable. Tilghman went above and beyond what is expected to accommodate our busy schedules. He made himself available and was always flexible, making the design phase less stressful for us. He was quite patient with us as we worked to create a home that meets our current needs but yet will serve us well in the future. Our home has a view of the golf course and Tilghman took great care to highlight that feature. We also desired a mix of a traditional and somewhat formal exterior with a more transitional interior and Tilghman was quite successful in that endeavor. Tilghman is well established in the Wilmington, NC area and therefore knows who the best local tradesmen are in our community. He has years of experience and it shows." - Betsy Weinberg, client

"We interviewed several local architects and Tilghman hands down was the one we felt right at home with.  Our project is a rather large one and a two-step process. Part one was the construction of a "pool house" and separate 3-car garage with a pool in the middle. Part two is a main living house that would connect the garage and "Pool House" with breezeways to create a courtyard in the middle surrounding the pool.
Tilghman was extremely patient and very thorough with all of the planning and ideas that we threw at him. He was especially brilliant when it came to my "out of the box" thinking and curating it onto paper. Our process isn't a conventional one, therefore articulate planning went into our project.
During the construction process Tilghman was available! He answered his phone and was reliable during the entire process from appliance selection to finalize trim detail with our builder.
Only half of our project is complete and we can't wait to get started on the last half. Tilghman Herring is not only an exceptional architect but a wonderful person inside and out." -

"We have had the opportunity of working with Tilghman Herring of Hood Herring Architecture in the layout and design of cabinetry for almost two decades. It is evident Tilghman really enjoys the process of designing a home for his clients, listening to their thoughts on design and functionality, while being conscious of the build and budgeting aspect to make sure cost goals are met. He takes the extra step of accompanying his clients to our showrooms to help introduce and guide them through the process of selecting cabinetry for the homes he designs. The value to his clients is the education he gives them during the process, as well as giving his clients the time they need to make good and informed decisions. An excellent choice and a professional whom we enjoy working with." - Hollingsworth Cabinetry
